My ideal classroom layout has room to move around. I want students to be able to move around the classroom without the fear of bumping into things. I chose to have a whiteboard with a carpet in front of it as a meeting carpet for morning meeting and other times when we are doing whole class lessons. In the back conner of the room there is a small group center, this would be where small group instruction such as, math groups, reading groups, or spelling groups would happen. The reason it is a separate area from the meaning carpet is because it is a little more private. The small group center also allows me to keep specific materials, in that area, that I know will be used for small group work. My ideal classroom has a reading area where I will store all level books in the bookshelves around it so students can easily access them. This area is a great place for students to sit and read during readers workshop or free time. There isn't enough room for everyone in this space so I will make a rotation chart so each student gets to spend time in the reading area during readers workshop. Next to the whiteboard are two extra shelves where I will keep other books. Behind the teacher desk is the teacher shelf on this shelf I will keep classroom materials such as pencils, coloring implements, and paper. These materials will be brought out when needed. I chose not to leave them in an easily accessible area to students because I want to reduce waste in the classroom. I will keep some of the items on my desk so there will be materials available at all times, but students will have to ask for more when more materials are needed. In my classroom I have three student desks each of these desks seats six students three on each side. I tried to position them in such a way that when the students are sitting at their desks they would still be able to see the whiteboard. In the conner behind the student desks are the computers. I want to integrate technology into the classroom. Besides having two computers in the class room I would like to have a couple iPads that students can use. I want to incorporate computers and iPads so students are easily able do research within the classroom instead of having to go to the library. Another reason I want to have technology in the classroom is so students can utilize educational programs such as Raz-Kids and educational games. Next to the computer between the two windows is the science table. On the science will be the class pet. Students will be able to observe the class pet and take turns taking care of it. During the school year items will be added to the science table that have to with different units being taught. My favorite part about my ideal classroom are the giant windows. These windows allow students to see the outside, which helps students feel less confined. The giant windows also are great for students to observe the changes throughout the seasons. This could be incorporated into science or into the morning message every morning. My ideal classroom is warm and inviting. I want students feel welcome and loved each and everyday they walk into the classroom.
